If you are near the Galveston area, you'll want to check out Moody Gardens. After surviving Hurricane Ike in 2008, the course was redone by Peter Jacobsen and Jim Hardy. Challenges here include water on nearly every hole and wind coming in from the beach.

This centrally located course is known as one of the best municipals in the nation. It was originally built as a 9-hole course in 1912 near the hospital at Camp Logan for use by convalescent soldiers. While renovated in the mid-90s, great care went in to preserving the historical quality of the course while still allowing for proper maintenance. Over the years, it has hosted many famous golfers including Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

Traditions Course at Cypresswood
This top rated, award-winning Keith Foster design is located close to Bush Intercontinental Airport. Surrounded by thick forests, these undulating fairways offer a fun experience and dramatic topography. It was hit hard by flooding due to Hurricane Harvey and is currently working to re-open in early 2018. So if you happen to be in the area when they re-open, be sure to show them some love by playing a round of golf!

Tournament Course at the Golf Club of Houston
Even though it's home to a PGA Tour stop, the Shell Houston Open, you can play here too. This Rees Jones design is a heavily oversewed winter course set up to emulate the conditions at August National the week before the Masters. The best times to play are in the winter or spring, before or after the PGA Tour is in town.
